Belleville West Music

Below you will find information specific to the Music Department at Belleville West High School.  The West Music Department features a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles including Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, Orchestra, Marching Band, Show choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band, as well as a number of additional choral and instrumental ensembles of varying instrumentation.  We encourage you to become involved in the many offerings of our department.


INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC VOCAL MUSIC

Concert Band/Marching Band
Symphonic Band/Marching Band

The Concert Band and Symphonic Band are performing groups consisting of students from all grade levels of the high school.  During the first quarter of the academic year, students from the Concert Band and Symphonic Band join members of the flag and auxiliary units to form the Marching Band.  All students attend a summer band camp on the West campus prior to the start of school.  The Marching Maroons perform for athletic events, band festivals, and community parades throughout Illinois and the Greater St. Louis area.  At the conclusion of the football season, performance study in Concert Band and Symphonic Band includes standard literature by traditional and contemporary composers.  Note:  Admission to the Symphonic Band is through audition and consent of the instructor.  Please contact Dr. Birkner for Symphonic Band audition information; 222-7687.  MARCHING MAROONS WEBSITE

Orchestra:  The Orchestra includes woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments and studies music of the traditional and contemporary chamber orchestra.  Comprised of students from all grade levels, participation includes one full class period and campus performances throughout the school year.  Admission is by consent of the instructor.  Please contact Dr. Birkner for additional information; 222-7687

Jazz Band:  Jazz Bands an advanced ensemble consisting of students from all classes, but primarily sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  This ensemble features the study of music of significant jazz composers and performers and the study of jazz improvisation.  Students are selected from the Symphonic and Concert Bands or Orchestra.  Admission is through audition and consent of the instructor.  Participation in this class includes one full class period and numerous public performances including the home basketball games.
 
Jazz Ensemble:  This ensemble meets each day for one-half hour and is comprised of students from all classes.  Students are selected from the Symphonic and Concert Bands or Orchestra.  Admission is by audition and consent of the instructor.  Coursework includes the fundamental study of jazz improvisation and the performance of traditional and contemporary compositions.  Please contact Dr. Birkner for audition information; 222-7687
 
Instrumental Music Class:  This class consists of woodwind, brass and percussion students from all grade levels and meets for one-half hour each day.  This provides supplemental instruction for the student in Concert or Symphonic Band as a second instrumental class.  Scheduled opposite the lunch hour, this will enable students to continue study while completing Health and/or Driver Education requirements.
 
Fundamentals of Music:  This academic, non-performance class has been designed to explore the fundamental elements of music including pitch and rhythmic notation, melody, harmony, and musical composition.  A variety of musical styles and composers/performers will be studied to include American contemporary and popular music and music of other cultures.  This course is available to students in grade 11 or 12.  In addition, this class is offered for dual credit during the spring semester; Music 104-Fundamentals of Music on the SWIC campus.  Students may enroll for college credit while taking the class on the West campus.  Please contact Dr. Birkner for additional information; 222-7687

Mixed Chorus:  This choir is for freshman level students and students who are new to the choral program.  Participation in this class includes one-half class period each day and public performances on the campus. We focus on the basics of music theory, sight-reading and perform a wide variety of choral literature.  Please contact Mrs. Moeller @ 222-7686

Treble Choir:  This chorus performs a variety of choral literature for the female voice; grades 10-12.  Admission is through consent of the instructor.  Participation includes one-half hour class period each day and public performances on the campus.  Please contact Mr. Wilson @ 222-7629 or Mrs. Moeller @ 222-7686

Bass Choir:  This all male chorus performs various styles of choral literature for the male voice.  The group consists of students from all grade levels.  Admission is through consent of the instructor.  Participation in this class includes one-half hour class each day and occasional public performances on the campus.  Please contact Mrs. Moeller @ 222-7686

Concert Choir:  This is an advanced mixed choir that performs various styles of choral literature.  This choir consists of students in grades 10-12.  In 2002, this ensemble was selected for performance at the Olympic Torch Lighting Ceremonies in St. Louis.  Admission is by audition and consent of the instructor.  Participation in this class includes one full class period and various public performances. Bellevillettes:  This ensemble is an advanced treble voice choir that performs various styles of literature for the female voice. This choir consists of students in grades 10-12.  Admission is through audition and consent of the instructor.  Participation in this class includes one full class period and public performances during the school year.

Maroon Majic:  This is a select chamber choir which experiments with vocal a-cappella, jazz arrangements and a variety of choral literature.  Students are selected from Concert Choir and Bellevillettes.  Admission is through audition only.  Participation in this class includes one full class period and students must enroll for both semesters of the school year.  The ensemble presents numerous public performances outside of the school day.  Please contact Mrs. Moeller for audition information; 222-7686
