On Wednesday, May 11, Belleville West will dismiss at 2:55 p.m. to facilitate a faculty meeting. We will be using the following schedule:

Congratulations to HY NEWS staffers Zach Austin and Steven Stehnach who placed at the IHSA State Journalism Contest last Friday. Zach took 4th place in Sports Writing, and Steven took 6th place in News Writing. Great Job to the entire BELLEVINOIS and HY NEWS Team! You rock and we are really proud of you! This year’s final West Unplugged: Acoustical Guitar Jam will take place this Friday, May 13 at your BW Library from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Stop on by the library for details.

The Key Club and the Belleville Kiwanis Club are sponsoring an E-cycle day here at West on Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m.- 1 p.m. Please bring by any electronics that day to donate. We can take used batteries of any kind, used electronics, cell phones, computers, computer monitors, TVs ($5 suggested donation for monitors and TVs), anything with a cord can be recycled. You can bring donations to B108 this week if you are unable to come on Saturday morning.

ATTENTION STUDENTS: The yearbooks have arrived. Your pre-sale books may be picked up on May 12 and May 13 during lunch hours. You will only be able to pick them up during your lunch hour, so do not attempt to pick one up at a different time. Check on the yearbook display case to see if you’ve pre-ordered a book. If you did not pre-order and you would still like to purchase a book, we will have a limited supply available for 60 dollars. We will also be selling previous years’ books. Friday, May 13--Final Due Date: Students’ and staffs’ books and fines are due

Friday May 20--Last day the library will be open to student walk-ins

May 23-27--Library will be closed for inventory, exceptions are listed below:

Book Returns: Students may come to the library to return books at any time.

Computer Lab: The computer lab will be available during May 23-27

Printing: Students may print projects during the weeks of May 23-27.

Before & after school

During lunch hours

With a blue pass from a teacher
Research:
Students with BLUE passes may use the library for school research during 1st – 7th periods the week of May 23-27.

Students may use the library before and after school for school research

Special needs: If a teacher needs books or resources for classes, accommodations will be made.

DeVry University is offering PASSPORT2COLLEGE this summer from 7/5/11 to 8/4/11. This is an excellent opportunity for students who will be entering their junior or senior year in the Fall 2011to earn college credit. There is no tuition cost. You should apply if you want to jump start your college education, have an interest in business/technology and have a GPA of 2.8 or higher. Please see Mrs. McMurray in C109 for the application.

JOB OPENING: Midwest Transit Equipment is hiring students 18 years old and older for part-time, seasonal employment. The job consists of detailing and washing inside/outside of buses. JOB OPENINGS: Scottrade Center and Peobody Opera House are hiring students through their High School Student Employment Program. Students must be at least 16 years old, have a “B” average, must be juniors or seniors in the fall of 2011, and bring 2 letters of recommendation and high school transcript to the interview. Southern Illinois University at Carbondale’s College of Business is offering an opportunity to explore careers in business. This program is focused at minority students interested in the business profession (management, marketing, finance and accounting). The program will run from June 18-25, 2011. Are you interested in attending a summer camp, earning college credits, visiting a college campus? If so, please go to our website, click on Guidance and see the Summer Programming opportunities available or see Mrs. McMurray in C109.

DeVry University’s St. Louis Campus will be offering a 5 week “tuition waived” program for high school students to earn college credit in business and technology courses. This is open to students entering their junior or senior year. Classes begin on July 12 and end August 11. Classes will meet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Application and paperwork deadline is June 10, 2011. See Mrs. McMurray for an application.

Volunteers: There is another opportunity to help others and to add to your Volunteer West service hours. If you would be interested in helping with the Queen of Peace Race on May 14th from 8-11, please see Ms. Tieman in B238 and make sure that you report your hours to Ms. Emmons or Dr. Hayden in C104.

Science Club: We will be having our last meeting of the year this Mon. after school. We have important business and fun to take care of. We will meet in Mr Mitchell's room (B211) so we can see the fruits of our labors in the greenhouse. Mr. Richardson

FCA will be meeting tonight at 7:15 - 8:45 at Kalie Vyers house. We will be electing officers for next year and of cource having some Fun, Food, and Fellowship.

Congratulations to the West Softball team for placing 3rd in the 12 team Triad tournament this weekend. Great job girls!

There will be a mandatory meeting for all boys interested in playing basketball Thursday, May 12. The meeting will be at 8:10 in room D106. If you cannot attend the meeting, please see Coach Muniz in D106 or Coach Garrett in B219 so you can get the information about summer basketball.

There will be a brief informational meeting for all girls interested in playing GIRLS VOLLEYBALL this fall on Tuesday, May 10, in B317. Come before school at 8:10 or after school at 3:30. See you then! - Coach Betz
