We can take used batteries of any kind, used electronics, cell phones, computers, computer monitors, TVs ($5 suggested donation for monitors and TVs), anything with a cord can be recycled. You can bring donations to B108 this week if you are unable to come on Saturday morning.

ATTENTION STUDENTS: The yearbooks have arrived. Your pre-sale books may be picked up on May 12 and May 13 during lunch hours. You will only be able to pick them up during your lunch hour, so do not attempt to pick one up at a different time. Check on the yearbook display case to see if you’ve pre-ordered a book. If you did not pre-order and you would still like to purchase a book, we will have a limited supply available for 60 dollars. We will also be selling previous years’ books. This is an excellent opportunity for students who will be entering their junior or senior year in the Fall 2011to earn college credit. There is no tuition cost. Southern Illinois University at Carbondale’s College of Business is offering an opportunity to explore careers in business. This program is focused at minority students interested in the business profession (management, marketing, finance and accounting). The program will run from June 18-25, 2011. DeVry University’s St. Louis Campus will be offering a 5 week “tuition waived” program for high school students to earn college credit in business and technology courses. This is open to students entering their junior or senior year. Classes begin on July 12 and end August 11. Classes will meet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Application and paperwork deadline is June 10, 2011. See Mrs. McMurray for an application.

There will be a brief meeting after school for all varsity wrestlers Wednesday, May 11, in the Wrestling Room. This is for the Conference Championship Photo! Please see Coach Sears if you have any questions. Also, use this opportunity to return any Wrestling gear that you may have!

Mark your calendars- This Thursday, May 12th is an important day- The Belleville East and Belleville West baseball teams will be playing their first annual Coaches vs. Cancer baseball game at Belleville East. The teams need your support in order to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Admission is free but the teams will be donating all the money raised in the concession stand to the American Cancer Society. We will also be taking donations throughout the game. Please come out and help us support this important cause.

Would you like to own an Amazon Kindle, an electronic reader that allows you to carry hundreds of books in a device no bigger than the average paperback? Then donate your gently-used, school-appropriate books to the BW Library before Friday, May 20. The books you donate will be used to build classroom libraries in the English Department. For each book that you donate, you will receive one ticket that enters you in the drawing for the Kindle. The more books that you donate, the more chances you have to win. The Thinking Cup Café closes Friday, May 13 at 10:00 a.m. The library staff thanks all the students who volunteered their time to work as café baristas. The Key Club and the Belleville Kiwanis Club are sponsoring an E-cycle day here at West on Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m.- 1 p.m. Please bring by any electronics that day to donate. We can take used batteries of any kind, used electronics, cell phones, computers, computer monitors, TVs ($5 suggested donation for monitors and TVs), anything with a cord can be recycled. You can bring donations to B108 this week if you are unable to come on Saturday morning.

ATTENTION STUDENTS: The yearbooks have arrived. Your pre-sale books may be picked up on May 12 and May 13 during lunch hours. You will only be able to pick them up during your lunch hour, so do not attempt to pick one up at a different time. Check on the yearbook display case to see if you’ve pre-ordered a book. If you did not pre-order and you would still like to purchase a book, we will have a limited supply available for 60 dollars. We will also be selling previous years’ books. DeVry University is offering PASSPORT2COLLEGE this summer from 7/5/11 to 8/4/11. This is an excellent opportunity for students who will be entering their junior or senior year in the Fall 2011to earn college credit. There is no tuition cost. You should apply if you want to jump start your college education, have an interest in business/technology and have a GPA of 2.8 or higher. Please see Mrs. McMurray in C109 for the application.

Are you interested in attending a summer camp, earning college credits, visiting a college campus? If so, please go to our website, click on Guidance and see the Summer Programming opportunities available or see Mrs. McMurray in C109.

DeVry University’s St. Louis Campus will be offering a 5 week “tuition waived” program for high school students to earn college credit in business and technology courses. This is open to students entering their junior or senior year. Classes begin on July 12 and end August 11. Classes will meet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Application and paperwork deadline is June 10, 2011. See Mrs. McMurray for an application.

STUDENT COUNCIL: All outgoing AND incoming council members are encouraged to attend the executive council election in B113 on Friday, May 13 at 7:30am. This is a very important meeting as it builds the foundation for next year's council. Breakfast will be served! --- Thanks! Mr. Woodrome

 

Little Theater Technicians: We are looking for some people who are interested in working lights and sound for a few summer dance productions. These are paid positions opened to Little Theater trained techs who are interested. See Dr. Hentze in B232 if you have an interest in finding out more information. -- Dr. Hentze

 

SPEECH & ACTING TEAM -- Our final meeting of the year will be this Thursday, May 12, after school in B107. Remind all the team members you see! --Mr. Jenkins

Little Theatre members: Our final meeting of the year will be held after school tomorrow in the PAC. We will be holding elections for 2011-2012 officers, and we will have information about our year-end celebration. (Don't forget to make your reservation for the celebration by this Friday, May 13.)

Volunteers: There is another opportunity to help others and to add to your Volunteer West service hours. If you would be interested in helping with the Queen of Peace Race on May 14th from 8-11, please see Ms. Tieman in B238 and make sure that you report your hours to Ms. Emmons or Dr. Hayden in C104.

Interested in Girls Golf? Come to an informational meeting on camp, tournaments, try-outs and more on Tuesday, May 17th at 8:05am OR 3:25pm in room B222. If you are unable to attend, please stop by and talk to Coach Souders.

There will be a brief meeting after school for all varsity wrestlers Wednesday, May 11, in the Wrestling Room. This is for the Conference Championship Photo! Please see Coach Sears if you have any questions. Also, use this opportunity to return any Wrestling gear that you may have!

GIRLS interested in playing VOLLEYBALL this fall, if you missed the meeting on Tuesday stop by B317 ASAP to pick up information about volleyball opportunities this Summer. - Coach Betz

Mark your calendars- This Thursday, May 12th is an important day- The Belleville East and Belleville West baseball teams will be playing their first annual Coaches vs. Cancer baseball game at Belleville East. The teams need your support in order to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Admission is free but the teams will be donating all the money raised in the concession stand to the American Cancer Society. We will also be taking donations throughout the game. Please come out and help us support this important cause.

There will be a mandatory meeting for all boys interested in playing basketball Thursday, May 12. The meeting will be at 8:10 in room D106. If you cannot attend the meeting, please see Coach Muniz in D106 or Coach Garrett in B219 so you can get the information about summer basketball.

FRESHMEN:  Do you have the desire to really make a difference this year and become a student leader admired by the entire Belleville West population?  Then STUDENT COUNCIL is for you!  Anyone interested in running for the 2011-2012 STUDENT COUNCIL must pick up a petition in the commons between Wednesday, August 24, and Friday, August 26, during lunch hours.  Each petition should be completed and turned in to the commons no later than 5th hour on Friday, August 26.  There will be a freshman assembly on Monday, August 29, and students running for an office must give a short speech during this time.  The 2011-2012 Student Council will meet every Wednesday and Friday at 7:45 a.m.  Meeetings are mandatory, so be sure you can attend before petitioning.  Good luck!  - Mr. Woodrome

 

LIFETOUCH PICTURES:  The LIFETOUCH photographers will be on the Belleville West campus all day Wednesday, August 24, 2011.  LIFETOUCH will take all student pictures during all PE, Health, Driver's Education and Music classes in the Gym Annex.  All faculty and staff should have their pictures taken during their unassigned time.  All students should be reminded to bring their LIFETOUCH picture forms and money with them at the time their picture is taken. - Mr. James

 

Are you interested in performing onstage or working behind the scenes?  Join Belleville West LITTLE THEATRE for the first production of the season, The Diary of Anne Frank.  Auditions will be held after school on Tuesday, August 23.  The show includes roles for five male actors and five female actors.  Audition packets are available in room B325 and in room B330.  Applications for student directors and student technical directors are also available in B325 and B330.  Student director applications are due next Wednesday, August 24. - Ms. Bielong/Mr. Lodle

ATTENTION SENIORS:  Start looking for SCHOLARSHIP MONEY now!  Every Thursday, new scholarships will be announced in the bulletin and posted on the website.  There will also be a hard copy of the list in the School Counseling Office.  Here is the first scholarship post of the year:

 

Washington University Danforth Scholarship - For seniors planning to attend Washington University next year.  Must display academic excellence, community service and high moral character.  This is a nomination scholarship - to be considered for nomination, write a short letter of interest (including your name, intended major and list of extracurricular and community service activities) to Mrs. Cryder by Oct. 1.

 

Wabash College, Top Ten Scholarship - For male seniors planning to attend Wabash College, who rank in the top ten percent of the senior class.  If you qualify and wish to be nominated, see Mrs. Cryder immediately.  $15,000 yearly; renewable for 4 years.  Due August 29.

There will be a mandatory MAROON MADNEZZ meeting this Friday, August 19, in Mr. Witt's room, B218, at 8:00 a.m.  We will be signing up/discussing t-shirts for the year as well as a possibility of a fan bus to Indiana next Friday for the football teams 1st team.  - Mr. Witt
