"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically... Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. (1929-1968) Civil Rights leader.
Character education prepares students to come face to face with the realities of life, equipped and capable of making ethically sound decisions and responsible choices in a world of challenge, opportunity, and change. Character education provides a foundation upon which the educational community can share in a commitment to the academic, emotional, and social well-being of young people.
Belleville East High School has partnered with two local organizations to further our character education mission within our school and community, the City of Belleville's BASIC initiative (Belleville Achieves Strength In Character) and the CharacterPlus organization of the greater St. Louis Region.
The BASIC Initiative is designed to enhance character in our community, with the hope that each citizen will embrace and live the BASIC qualities. www.thebasicinitiative.com
CharacterPlus is an organization which works with schools and other civic-minded organizations to advance and sustain the cause of character education through research, program development, training, professional development, and community organization. www.characterplus.org
